Photonic crystals are periodic dielectric materials at the size scale of wavelengths of light. They introduce photonic bandgaps, where light of a certain range of frequencies is not allowed to propagate. When one or more holes are removed from a photonic crystal, an allowed mode can be created for a single frequency or frequencies in the previously forbidden photonic bandgap. My research studies the properties and applications GaAs photonic crystal nanocavities by using embedded InAs quantum dots as optical emitters.
