My work focuses on the optimization of light extraction efficiency from GaN light emitting diodes (LED) using photonic crystals to efficiently and controllably couple guided modes, containing the majority of the emitted light, into extracted modes. Angular resolved photoluminescence measurements are used to show the effective use of photonic crystals to couple guided modes into radiative modes and show how photonic crystal characteristics, especially the lattice period, affect the outcoupling. Processing GaN on such small length scales is also studied, including novel patterning techniques.
