By trapping light in nanoscale photonic cavities, we explore the interaction between single photons and semiconductor quantum dots. Because the light is confined to ultra-small volumes, we can observe the most extreme regimes of light-matter interaction in these structures. Such intense coupling can be exploited to construct highly efficient lasers and devices for quantum information communication and processing.
